Resolutions: Words

Words! Words are my world!! I am a word girl! I love writing and playing around with word choice and word arrangement!

So, why am I going to talk about being better with my words if I love them so much?

When I was attending college to get my degree in English, I took a linguistics class. The purpose of this class was to learn about word origins, dialects, and things of that nature. Think of it as a “word foundation,” if you will. It was in this class that I learned and adapted to the idea that words are just words. It makes it easier to write when you have that mindset!

However, this is where my “confession” comes in. I am very wordy but, I have a few words that are my favorite words and they aren’t the best words to just blurt out at any time.

I recently had a conversation with someone about whether or not certain words are “bad” words. Me, being who I am with the background I have, decided to share how I learned that words are just words. In fact, at one point in history, the word “belly” was considered to be a curse word. I have felt uneasy about that conversation ever since.

You see, if I’m going to achieve what I believe is my purpose in life, I can’t go around just spouting out certain words that society currently views as vulgar. I have to be mindful of who I represent and what my end game (purpose) on this earth is.

I’m not giving up on words and I’ll definitely let something slip here and there because I am human. But, I am working on thinking about a better way to say something before I say it. Isn’t that how we should operate anyway? How many times have you said something in the moment before really thinking about it or who you were around? Words matter. They have a power no weapon can possess.

Because words are so powerful, we must look at the intention behind them. We can call someone a butthole and would still mean the same thing as the curse word. So the question that needs to be asked before speaking is; what is my intention.

A lot of us speak in the moment. We think that since we don’t use ugly words it’s okay to say other words instead. No, it really isn’t. Intention sharpens the blade of the word sword.

So, I will not only think about my word choice but the intention I want to have behind it. We are supposed to love everyone, not show hatred or cruelty toward anyone. My intention is to speak with love shown in my words even in my hottest of moments.

My words are my “tool” for my purpose and the intention of my purpose is why I have chosen the path I am on. I have been empowered by the realization of who I am and what I am to do. It is my duty to show others how to achieve the same.
