Luck of the Irish

In the summer of 2023, my husband and I took a belated honeymoon to Europe. We spent three amazing nights in both Dublin and London. For someone who loves reading, writing, and history, I didn’t want to come home.

We had an amazing time discovering things we never thought we would. We walked through castles and cathedrals centuries old. Did you know Bram Stroker actually worked in the Dublin Castle for awhile? Did you know manuscripts from Shakespeare and the Great philosophers are located in library at Trinity College? My nerd heart burst with everything we discovered during our short time in Dublin.

The weather was beautiful, cool, and sunny, making walking around everyday very enjoyable. One of the massive seagulls that live there even pooped on my husband’s jacket, which is considered to bring luck.

But, that event is not why I titled this blog The Luck of the Irish. You see, my Aunt De was a successful, single woman who traveled all over the world with her friends when she was young. Ireland was one of her favorite places to see.

When she found out I was going to Dublin, she made sure I traveled carrying the luck of the Irish with me. She sent me a bracelet with an Irish Euro charm on it. As promised, I put it on the day we started our travel and wore it every single day of the trip. We had probably what will remain one of our top most favorite trips of our lives.

Ironically, when we were seated in the plane to fly home, the bracelet fell off my wrist and broke in a way that couldn’t be fixed. It was if it was saying, “I did my job and kept you safe.”

My aunt passed away last year. I will always cherish how she had to make sure we were watched over while we traveled. We had some great conversations once I was home about what my husband and I got to experience.

I can’t wait to go back to Ireland and explore more. I’ll be sure to carry the luck the of Irish with me and remember my aunt as I go.
